The Tweed Museum of Art
Christina
I have always enjoyed museums. Art, history, technology — it doesn’t matter, I love museums. A museum I have recently visited, and loved, is located on the University of Minnesota- Duluth campus. The Tweed Museum of Art has a wide range of art, and there is something there for everyone.
This museum started as merely a collection of art that was gathered by George P. Tweed and his wife Alice in the 1920s. After George’s death, his wife turned their collection into what is now known as the Tweed Museum, to be used as an educational resource for students and anyone else who was interested in learning about the art.
The museum has exhibits that change about every five months. When I visited there was an exhibit called "You and Yours: Images of Family." This exhibit shows what families look like around that world and how they are different and similar based on society. This was a very interesting idea for me because I have never thought about how to show what a family is through art. It was a really touching exhibit because it showed that a family can be anything — it doesn’t need to be what is typically thought of as family. It was also a comforting feeling that people all around the world are connected through the need to have the love and bond with people that can only be found through family. There are many different types of media used in this exhibit, as artists explored the feelings of family and how to portray them through art.
Duluth is a lovely city and is filled with things you should see, ranging from campus life, to the culture of the downtown waterfront, to the older parts of the city. Once you plan your trip to Duluth, be sure to stop at The Tweed Museum of Art located on campus. It will broaden your views of history and better your understanding of how people see the world. If you get to visit before October 17 2010, you will have the chance to observe how all people are connected though family, and by seeing that you will surely be changed.
