Algoriddim's DJay
Kip
Well first off, lemme say that I am in no way anywhere near being a professional DJ, and
I really don't know too much of what I'm talking about. However, I have supreme taste in music (or so I'm told), and am very interested in getting into the music production/disc jockeying business.
Let's get into it.
It comes out of the box and all you have to do is pop in a nice little disc and it installs in about five minutes. Great! You get a setup of two virtual turntables, and all of the various adjustment knobs and buttons that I don't know the names of. The great thing is, it syncs directly with your iTunes library so you can begin mixing at once. You plop a song onto the table, and you're off! You can loop it, you can set where you want it to start, you can speed it up, you can slow it down, everything!
But that is just one table. There's a whole 'nother one right next to it! You can use the mixer to keep one track playing at a time, or try to blend two together. The handy "transition" feature makes it pretty simple to blend songs together, and sounds pretty professional, I think! It has several different transitions from simple fading to reversings and backspins, as well as a transition length adjuster. You also may set cue points if you want to jump around in a song, which is handy if you just want to skip to a good part. You can select the desired amount of measures and loop a song if you wish to extend the length of it as well as skip through parts with the skip button. Also, if you want to make a mix yourself, you can record it and send it into your iTunes! Then, you can post it on YouTube and gain endless internet fame!
That is not all. Probably the greatest feature of DJay is the "Automix" button. Automix is pretty much like iTunes Genius on steroids. It selects songs that go well together like Genius, but then it does all the mixing and transitioning automatically! It's great! You can select one song and have an entire party totally set, while you go out and dance with the crowd, eat all of the cheese cubes, or simply pretend that you're doing a great job behind the booth. Awesome! Automix makes this software perfect for aspiring DJs that are very lazy or tired.
Really, the only con I can see with this software is the fact that you need a pair of USB headphones to actually be able to listen to songs beforehand, which is actually a fairly big detriment, but nothing to scare anyone away.
The software has somewhat of a heavy price tag, clocking in at $49.95, but for what's included, I'd call it a very fair price! This neat little software has everything a basic DJ table setup has, without all of the expensive equipment needed. It gives you everything you need to start mixing in one convenient little package! Of course, this is limited by the size of your iTunes library, but that shouldn't deter you. If anything, it'll give you the inspiration needed to expand your musical horizons! The best thing about DJay is how incredibly easy it is to use. All of the complicated flipping and twisting and scratching that you may have to do with your hands is just a click away! Also, all of the features used do a good job of making it sound pretty professional, no matter what.
For a final thought, I would like to say that I agree wholeheartedly with MacWorld's review. I really think that DJay is "The DJ app that iLife is missing."
