Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Rose
George Smiley is retired.
At least, he was. Until out of the blue an old colleague turns up and asks for help. There is an important problem but nobody can know about it and
nobody can be trusted.
What does this have to do with an old retired man you may ask? Well, say the old retired man is not as old as he looks and lets say that he is not just a normal retired man, but he is a retired spy. George Smiley was a one of the best spies in his day who worked for a small government group called The Circus.
The friend who came for help, Peter Gulliam, thinks that there is a mole at the top of the Circus. It is up to Smiley to unveil the past to get to the present and find out who is the mole. Things aren’t easy though. Things have changed. His old boss is dead and the men still working for the Circus are working hard to keep things secret, including why Smiley and a few others were mysteriously fired years ago. People are unwilling to talk and when they do, the story unfolds.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carré, kept me in suspense every second. At one moment you suspect one person and the next you suspect another! Le Carré, who himself was a retired British counter-intelligence agent, wrote this book wonderfully. After reading it, I am even more excited for the movie based off of the book that will be coming out on September 16th!
The book may be a little difficult to read for some people but I still encourage an attempt be made. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a mystery thriller.
On a side note, the name of the book is codenames used in the book, which they got from an old children’s rhyme. Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief...
