I have found that good books have become hard for me to find. I sometimes look over the same shelf in the library twice in search of a book that will interest me. Last week I went to the library and began searching through the many books, but this time I found a book: For Freedom: The Story of a French Spy.
For Freedom, by Kimberley Burbaker Bradely, is a true story about a 15-year-old French girl by the name of Suzanne. Suzanne’s eyes are slowly opened to the sights and horrors of World War II. After a bombing in her hometown (Cherbourg, France), Suzanne’s house, friends and all of life as she knew it are taken from her by the Nazis. There was only one thing Germany could not take — her singing. Suzanne’s exceptional voice helps to keep her spirits up, but while her dream of becoming an opera singer is coming true, Suzanne struggles when she is asked to do something for her country that could cost her her own life. This inspiring book shows the bravery of those who risked their lives to help win the war against the Nazis.
Overall, I thought For Freedom was wonderful, and for many reasons! Thanks to an interview with the real Suzanne before writing the book Kimberly Brubaker Bradely brings out Suzanne’s thoughts and Cherbourgs’ struggles, making the characters come to life. I would definitely give this book 10 out of 10 stars.
Conclusion: Highly recommended!
