After two years of waiting, the long-awaited sequel to the acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum is here, and it exceeds expectations. Set a year and a half after the events of Arkham Asylum, the engaging storyline takes the player through a wonderful series of adventures featuring the Caped Crusader and a large array of other characters.
Knowing the storyline of Arkham Asylum adds to the entertainment value of the game, but if you don't know it, don't worry – you'll still love it. The plot of the game is of astounding quality for a video game. Hands down, it's the best story of a videogame I've ever seen, so good it would even make a fine screenplay. Appearances by some of the more minor characters of the Batman universe are a treat for comic book enthusiasts, and they will educate those who aren't savvy to the world of the Dark Knight. The gameplay itself only improves on that of it's predecessor. Batman now has twice the combat moves, far more gadgets, and the mechanics behind his gliding ability have much improved, with advanced control over altitude and turning.
Playing the game makes one feel like the superhero himself. I found myself grinning with childish excitement as I elbowed a thug in his tattooed face, letting my mouth hang open during the plot twists, and in being in awe during the credits, as I marveled at what a masterpiece the game was.
Overall, Batman: Arkham City is one of the greatest videogames I've ever played. The gameplay, the thorough storyline, and the massive open-world map come together in what is truly one of the greatest games of the decade.
